About
Cat Camp was a study skills course for incoming business students at a large public university. The course was intended to help first-year students develop generalized study skills for use in their required core courses. I was brought in to teach sections of the class, consult as an SME on learning strategies, and design my own curriculum. Topics included collaboration and group work, mindset, note taking, and talking to professors.
Process
When I started working with the course instructors on ‘Cat Camp’ the program had existed for at least two years. I first consulted with them over the summer of 2017 to help improve the study skills content of the course as an SME on adult education, pedagogy, and learning science. After several meetings the offer was extended to teach and develop my own sections of the course. Learning objectives were pre-defined but I was free to develop my own learning experiences. I created lectures, in-class activities, and homework, and facilitated sections of the class in Fall 2017.
